We are delighted to announce that Pierre Marty has been awarded the 2025 D. W. Smith Research Fellowship. Dr. Marty, a PhD in Art History and postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Art History at the University of Toronto, was selected for his project entitled “Drawing French Corsica: Jean-Charles Delafosse (1734–1789) and the Making of a Territory.”
With this project, Pierre Marty aims to study the little-known stay of architect and drawing instructor Jean-Charles Delafosse (Paris, 1734–1789) in Corsica in 1770, shortly after the island’s annexation by France in 1769. He also seeks to shed light on the role of drawing, figurative and architectural representation, and their transmission in the imperial processes of symbolic, cultural, and political integration of conquered or annexed territories during the long eighteenth century. The D. W. Smith Fellowship will support a research stay in the municipal and departmental archives of Bastia, Corsica.
We extend our sincere congratulations and best wishes for the success of his research.
